Top 3 Tips for Eating Healthy During the Holidays

What if this year, come January 1st, you weren’t swearing off all sweets and promising to lose 10 pounds? What if instead you enjoyed a healthy holiday season and took on the New Year already feeling fantastic? Sounds pretty good, right? Believe it or not, this can be you! I am sharing my top 3 tips for healthful holiday eating that won’t make you feel like you are missing out.

1. Eat a balanced breakfast.

The way you start your morning sets the tone for the whole day. Giving your body proper nourishment with protein, fiber and healthy fats within an hour of waking up will get your metabolism running and help you make more mindful choices later. When you skip breakfast, you end up digging yourself out of deprivation mode all day long. This makes those holiday treats at work look even more appealing and that peppermint mocha latte feel like a necessity.

Try these easy-to-make breakfast recipes that will help curb your cookie cravings:

2. Don’t go to a holiday party hungry.

Forget what your mother told you about not spoiling your appetite. I say, go for it! Have a snack or mini-meal before hitting the holiday party scene. We all know what happens when we show up hungry to a room full of snickerdoodles and cheese plates. Don’t get me wrong, I love cinnamon cookies and artisan cheese, but they are easier to enjoy in moderation when you aren’t starving. Having a healthy bite before leaving the house will allow you to mindfully celebrate by nibbling on a few holiday favorites and feeling satisfied.

Here are two go-to snacks to munch on pre-party:

3.Make healthy swaps.

Food is a big part of holiday tradition. This year try making healthier versions of your family recipes. I did this a few years ago with pumpkin pie and the new rendition is now the family favorite. Making a dish more healthful does not have to mean less tasty.
